BOBBY CALF TRADE
CARRIERS AND BUYERS CONFERENCE PROBLEMS (Pitr Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Over 60 representatives of interests concerned in the bobby calf trade met in conference at Auckland to-day at the invitation of Mr. E. J. Phelan, the No. 1 district transport licensing authority, who presided. During the forenoon, representatives of the two groups concerned, the carriers and the buyers, met separately and considered a scheme submitted by Mr. Phelan and a combined conference is being held this afternoon. In addressing the preliminary conference, Mr. Phelan said that the time had arrived when a genuine effort should be made to remedy the disorganised conditions. “From my observations," he said, "I am satisfied that the conditions in the past have been appalling and that there is the utmost justification for giving serious attention to this problem.” Two aspects calling for attention, he said, were the purchasing of calves and matters relating to transport. It was desirable that the carriers should not be bound to .individual firms.
