Now For Garbo’s Secret
A RESTAURANT proprietor, Eugene Mifford, subpoeaed to appear for Greta Garbo in the lawsuit brought against her by David Schratter, who claims that the star owes him £2OOO, outlined what his evidence will be. Mifford, one-time actor, knew Garbo
ip her old Stockholm days. He went with Garbo and a film director, Maurice Stiller, to Hollywood. Said Mifford: “Greta was a plump, appealing girl in those days. She had a job as barber, but did film extra work also. I remember one day she was sitting at a table in a scene in which I was leading man. She told me between sets that her name was Greta Gustafsson and that she was tremendously ambitious. “She was only 16, but I believed she had something, so I urged her to give up barber’s work, but she said it was a good, solid job. I advised her to take a course of dramatic Gaining, which she did, and she later won an £B-a-month contract. “When the chance of an American screen career came she said she intended to become an American citizen. But since Stiller’s death she has changed.”
