GAOLER’S RETIREMENT

MR. H. N. RICHARDSON OVER 30 YEARS’ SERVICE The gaoler at the Gisborne prison, Mr. H. N. Richardson, leaves his position this week after 301 years' service with the Prisons Department. He has been given three months’ leave of absence before finally retiring. Mr. Richardson intends to live at Brown’s Bay, near Auckland, and has arranged to leave Gisborne on Friday. He is succeeded by Mr. D. Davies, Greymouth. Mr. Richardson started his service as a warder in New Plymouth in 1906, and after two years was transferred to Wellington, where he spent 17 years, including service at Witako and Point Halswell. He came to Gisborne in 1926, where he has been ever since.

Prior to entering the service of the Prisons Department, Mr. Richardson was a fitter by trade, and for some time followed his calling in the employ of the department. He lived previously in Hull, England, and came to New Zealand in 1904.
