TORRIE’S CAMP NEWS
FANCY DRESS PARTY (Herald Correspondent.) Despite the inclement weather, a bright and jolly fancy dress party for children was held in the cook-house on Saturday by the social committee of the Torries road branch of the Labour Party. Between 50 and 60 children revelled in games, sing-songs and competitions. The dresses and costumes were of a high standard and evoked favourable comment by the adults present. The difficult task of judging for the various sections was left to Mr. D. Morton, of Bartletts’ whose selection was acclaimed by all. The following were the successful competitors:—Most true to character. Miss Betty Shaw (Gipsy Dancer), and Desmond Hardy (Chef.) Most comical' section, Miss Mary Crump (Indian Squaw) and Brian Gibson. (Popeye the Sailorman.) Tiny Tots.— Betty Davis, (Cupid.) Most original section, special prizes given by Mr. Morton.—Miss Jean Richards (Little Miss MufTett) and Raymond Ditchfield (Professional Wrestler.)
Following the presentation of the prizes, which created much excitement, an excellent supper was served to the children and adults, and each child was given a balloon and a bag of sweets. Torries Boys' Harmonica Band entertained during the evening and Miss Betty Hardy contributed a recitation, as did Master Colin Vance. Misses June and Merle Torrie sang a duet in Maori, and Misses and June Torrie also gave a duet
With a final romp around after supper, a lot of tired but happy ehildrpn retired and the adults enjoyed dancing and singing until a late hour.
