TAXI CONTROL POLICY

NOT YET DECIDED EXTRA GISBORNE LICENSE The whole of the question of the future policy for the control of taxis is at present under consideration, and the Minister of Transport has not yet made a decision as to when the change will be eflected. Advice to this effect was placed before the Gisborne Borough Council last night in a letter from the Commissioner of Transport in reply to an inquiry from the council as to when taxi proprietors were to be placed under the provisions of the Transport Licensing Act. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the letter to the Commissioner of Transport was sent aftei receiving an application from the Crest Taxi Company requesting the issue of another taxi license. The Crest Taxi Company said the additional license was required to enable the company to cope with increasing business and to avoid loss of business which at present could not be coped with through a lack of cars. A new license also would reduce the number of hours worked by the present drivers in the firm. The Mayor said that previously when a request was made for an additional license, the matter was deferred. Other taxi proprietors had objected to further licenses being granted, and' the council had agreed that before granting further licenses a conference of taxi owners would be called. It was decided to call a conference for next Tuesday.
