RUGBY FOR TO-MORROW

POVERTY BAY UNION GOOD FARE ON THE OVAL CELTIC AND H. 5.0.8. TO MEET Notes by “Sideline." With the points at an interesting stage, the feature of the dikttirC-i on the Uval to-morrow afternoon will he the meeting between Celle- and 11.5.0.8. seniors, and the winners will be a 1 aether step towards annexing the senior championship of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union.

When the two teams met in the Inst round the attendance at the Oval almost rivalled that ol a minor representative fixture and Celtic took the decision by 12 points to six. In that, game 11.5.0.8. were short of some of their key men and the Celts were at full strength, but in the second round the boot is rather on the other foot. Celtic have one or two of their usual side out on the line with injuries and yet, it seems that the Celts can always rely on a sound demonstration even from their replacements. They have that same determination that characterises the play of the senior men and the team usually carries the day. In H. 5.0.8.. however, the Celts will find that some quality of determination, and the coach. Mr. Thomas, has been concentrating on them to make Unlearn a championship-winning combination. H. 5.0.8. is only two points behind Celtic, the leaders, and the issue will rest largely with the result, ol this match. That does not mean that the championship is decided then for «the Celts will have the Old Boys to account for. Old , Boys are the holders of the clip and it was that team that wrested the trophy from the grasp of Celtic last season. Following is an insight into the club teams. Marist Hopeful After n number of weeks rebuilding, the Marist senior team is pi.ictim!1 .;.' lack to full strength and is Impend of registering its first win tomorrow when it stops out to oppose LAV.D. The pack lidded Inst week against Celtic gave the, best forward display to date, and the same pack will bo fitddcd again to-morrow. The back line will bo practically up to its old strength and the supporters of the club are expecting a first,-cdass display from them. M. Parker, who was missing from the pack last xveek, will be an absentee for some time as he is suffering front a badly dislocated shoulder sustained recently in a practice game. S. Yates has been cleared from the Celtic club and will turn out as first five-eighths in the next game. The other injured backs have recovered and also will be out on the paddock. A pleasing aspect of the game last week was the play of li. V. Lawless, the ex-League international. In all departments he played well and showed a good burst of speed in the loose. His club mate. W. Ritchie, was not far -behind and if is quite apparent that these men are a great gain, to Rugby in the district. Another newcomer, D. Hamon, was in the pack and played a sound game in the tight. E. O’Halloran and M. Doyle shone as a pair of fast-breaking forwards and they-were continually harrassing the Collie, inside backs. They were ably supported by the rest of the forwards. 11.5.0.8.’s Chance The H. 5.0.8. senior team will have its chance of climbing to the top of the championship ladder tu-morrojv when it takes the field for the second tune this season against the Celtic team. It will be remembered that on the last, occasion the old students met with defeat. The Celts must not be allowed to repeat their previous victory, and H. 5.0.8. have the material to win.

The seniors showed a vast, improvement, in their game last week with Y.M.P. though the forwards will have to concentrate on combined work and the backs must place more life and determination into their movements before they can claim to play classy Rugby. * , . For the first time .since the formation of the. club the tram has a chance ol winning the senior championship. In the past, they have had some good teams that have gone "as far as winning a complete round, but this is the first season that they have, had a team capable of lifting the senior championship cup. A hint to the backs;—Do not stand flat-footed and run across the field on receipt of the ball. Get that ball while on your toes and on the move and make the" goal-line your -first stopping place; yoin"other hacks will support you. " The full set of hacks and forwards are available for the match to-morrow and H. 5.0.8. supporters are confident that each man will do his utmost to win the match for the club and be in the team that won the championship cup for the -first time in the history of the-club.
