N.Z. CRICKETERS LANCASHIRE MAKE 314 VISITORS OUT FOR 282 COMMITS FOUR WICKETS (From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Heed. June 1, noon.) MANCHESTER, May 31. Lancashire secured a first innings lead of 32 runs against the New Zealand cricketers to-day. Tlie visitors carried their score from 272 for nine to 282. Lancashire, batting brightly, made 314, and the New Zealanders, in their second innings, had lost one wicket for 18 at stumps. The weather was dull and the wicket at Old Trafford ground was in good order for the resumption of the match. The New Zealanders bowled pertinaciously on a wicket that was as bard as a concrete road, but their success depended too much.on. Cawie and Roberts. The former had another good jday, neper being mastered. He opened with nine overs, three maidens, 16 runs and two wickets, one being caught at square-leg and the other bowled next ball, beside# having a catch dropped in the slips. Tourists Gain Grip , Lancashire topped the century without further loss, but after lunch Tindill smartly stumped Paynter, and Wallace brilliantly ran out Oldfield. New Zealand then gained a grip on the game, five wickets falling in two hours for 109. Roberts was rewarded for strenuous striving with two wickets, another chance being missed in the slips off him. Weir proved an effective change. However, Phillipson, who played really well, Duckworth, Pollard and Wilkinson saved the county by determined batting, and 44 were added in a last-wicket stand which was broken only by a fine catch off his own bowling by Moloney. Except for the two dropped catches, the fielding generally was clean, and sometimes brilliant, but the slow bowling did not disturb,, the. batsmen, and the bowling was almost wholly left to ‘ the faster men. New Zealand again were unable to get a good start, Page falling in the first over through snicking a bumper which he tried to hook, Hadlee and Moloney carefully played out time. The attendance was 3000. Scores were as follows: — ■ NEW ZEALAND —First Innings— " AV.
