ECONOMIC APPEASEMENT

ANGLO-AMERICAN TRADE EMPIRE CO-OPERATION INDUSTRIES IN LONDON (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 1, 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 31. The special correspondent of The Times emphasises that the outstanding interests in the Imperial Conference are the talks on economic appeasement. As defined by Mr. J. A. Lyons, the Australian Prime Minister,‘and Mr. W. L. McKenzie King, the Canadian Prime Minister, much depends on Anglo-American co-operation, which the Dominions are willing to do their utmost to bring about. Such would not only clear the channels for world trade, but prove a starting point for a fresh attempt at economic reconstruction and might also open the door to trade negotiations between Australia and America. The Economist emphasises that an Anglo-American commercial agreement is an essential preliminary to international appeasement. “A fact which converts necessity * into - a - golden- opportunity is that America is not merely willing' but anxious for such an agreement,” says the Economist. “Britain lias invited America and lias demonstrated the sincere desire for politico-economic co-operation. It is hard to believe one’s eyes when we see the British Government hesitating on the threshold and administering a snub to America which may drive her into a policy of isolation for a generation.”
