WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL YEAR’S RATE STRUCK COAST HEALTH OFFICER (Herald Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waiajm County Council was held tit Te Puia Springs last week, those present being the chairman, Cr. D. \\’. W. Williams, and Ors. .T. Hu,shy, 11. If. Fairlic, 11. Hyland, P. R. Jeft'erd, P. Manuel, 11. Te liiipu, 11. Williams, and D. T. Williams. A motion of sympathy with Mrs. .1. M. Reedy and family in their bereavement was carried in silence. In response to the appeal of the acting-Prime Minister, the lion. P. Fraser, for the King George V national memorial fund, the chairman stated that subscription lists had been opened at various parts of the comity. The Waiapu Hospital Hoard advised that it. considered the time had arrived when a health inspector should be permanently resident in the district.- — Councillors agreed that a permanent resident health inspector should be established on the Coast and resolved that the Health Department should be requested to make such an appoint meat,, the council being prepared to contribute on the same basis as the previous agreement. Mr. W. Cain, Past Coast Transport Company, Auckland, wrote setting out tentative freight charges and requesting support to an application to the Incensing Authority for a license for a goods service from Taneat.ua via the East Cape road.—After a full discussion, it was resolved that the council I in fairness to local carriers should not support such an application, but councillors, if they desired to d.o so, could accord support privately. Erection of Traffic Signs In reply to representations of the council regarding closely populated localities, and for declaration of certain county roads, the Commissioner of Transport wrote detailing the attitude of tlie department and suggesting that the council should consider the erection of class B signs at the townships.—lt. was resolved that the commissioner should be advised that the Council was agreeable to the erection of class B signs at the localities recommended, with the exception of Ruatoria township, which should be classified as a closely populated area. It was further resolved that the Automobile Association should be requested to erect the necessary class It signs within the county. The chairman reported having, at Te l’uia Springs, welcomed the Post-master-General, the lion. F. .Jones, to the con nlv.

Writing about the I.’epoi ua-Mahora mail, 1 t!ie Registrar of the Native Land Court stated that a large sum had been expended by the department on formation work ami he requested that the metalling should be undertaken. — It was decided that the department should be advised that the council considered the present location of the road entirely unsuitable, was unable to carry out any metalling until the road was proclaimed a public road, and objected to legalisation on the. present, location. It was decided that the council should apply to become a member of the Poverty Bay Employers’ Association. The resignation of Mr. Charles Woodford, potindkeeper at Ruatoria was accepted. Applications are 1o be called for the position. ». The Conciliation Commissioner, Wellington, forwarded notice of citation of the council as a party to the dispute of the New Zealand Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners and Joiners’ Machinists Industrial Association of Workers and Others.—The Employers’ Association to be requested to watch the interests of the council. Epidemic Precautions The Director-General of Health, Dr. M. 11. Watt, acknowledged a request for public precautions during the outbreak of infantile paralysis.- —The chairman stated that us a result of complaints received he had communicated with the Director-General asking that precautions in regard to gatherings should be taken in the interests of public health generally. This act ion was endorsed. The council accepted dedication of Barney’s Dane. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries ami Commerce, advised that the East Coast sugar boundaries after negotiations with the Sugar Companies, would be changed so as to extend Auckland prices to Hicks Bay, and places south of that, would be at ruling southern prices. This should remove the cause of dissatisfaction that operated between Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay.—ft was resolved to write to Mr. 11. G. Ilultquist, M.l\, thanking him for his efforts. The chief surveyor, Gisborne, referring to the closing of the road through lot J of section (i!>, Te Puia suburban, advised that should lessees of the land served'by this road agree, steps would be taken to close it.-—The chief surveyor is to be advised that an objection to the closing of the road has been received from the adjoining lessee. Hore Ilore Road Mr. A. J. 11. Kirklmn, Taoroa station, requested that the council should close a portion til the old Hore Ilore road and exchange it for an area of his land for the present Hore Ilore road.— It was resolved that the council should do this, the area ot the land to be received in exchange lor the old road to be determined by the county engineer after a conference with the owner of the land. The No. I District Highways Council wrote advising that a mooting would be held to consider estimates and the annual review ot the higliI ways. The following sections of road were recommended tor declaration as main highways: lokomaniMata road, live miles; l\opuaroa-W ai-

piro road, two miles. The chairman was appointed tho county’s representative at the annual confluence of the Counties’ Association, the clerk, Mr. A. CL Hicks, to accompany the chairman. The engineer was authorised to engage a surfaceman for the Wlinieponga road and one for the Maraehara road. Accounts amounting to £■1875 were passed for payment. General Rate of 23il in the £ Consideration was given to the estimates for the ensuing year amt the chairman gave notice of his intention to move at the .Tune meeting that the council make and levy a general rate of 12:}cl in the £ lor tho year 1937-38. Tho engineer was authorised to carry out urgent repairs to the surfaceman’s cottage at Tikitiki. The offer of Or. .TetTerd to find £SOO free towards tho cost ot construction of a bridge to provide access to tiis property was accepted with thanks. It was resolved to approach Mr. 1). J. Harry and ascertain whet tier the vacant section adjoining the theatre at Tokomaru Bay could tic utilised ns a ear parking area to relieve congestion existing in the locality. The county clerk was directed to take steps to enforce payment of arreas of rates.
