IMPORTS 25 PER CENT UP EXPORTS ALSO INCREASED Increases in imports over the wharves at Gisborne during the seven months of the Harbour Board's financial year completed on Alay 1 were equivalent to 25 per cent of the imports for the corresponding period of 1935-36, it was indicated in the monthly report of the managiugi-secretary, Air. 11. A. Barton, to to-day's meeting of the board. Exports also showed an .improvement, aud the general increase in traffic over the wharves was reflected in a substantial improvment in wharfages and harbour improvement rate collections. The report contained the following references to the trade of the port : "The cash statements and trade returns show that during April 6562 tons of cargo passed inward over the wharves, as compared with 4768 tons for the same month last year, and 3461 tons went outward compared with 2246 tons during April last, year. The returns covering seven months to the end of April show 37,281 tons inward, against 27,843 tons for the same period last year, and 23,323 tons outward, against 22,705 tons last year. This shows an increase of 9438 tons of imports and an increase of 618 tons of exports. "The cash statement figures for the seven months ended April, 1937, compared with the previous year's figures under main headings, show as follows: — "Receipts. Ship charges, 1936-37, £4146. 1935-36, £4248; wharfage, £10.626. £9461; harbour improvement, £3776. £3425 ; rent, £4425, £3445; rates, £7453. £9782; launch hire, £348, £317; sale of plant, etc., £9l, £27; sale of land and buildings, , £200; miscellaneous. £IOB7, £844; totals, 1936-37 £31.952. 1935-36 £31,749. This shows an increase in receipts of £203. "Expenditure.—lnterest, sinking fund, and .bank charges, 1936-57 £35,699, 193536 £35,754; new plant, buildings, etc., £9O, £477; grab dredgihig, £2696, £718; general expenditure, £7156, £6542; totals. 1936-37, £45,641, 1935-36, £43,491. This shows an increase of £2150 in expenditure."
