(Herald Correspondent.) At the Wairoa Borough Council meeting consideration was given to a motion to apply for a loan of £2OOO for public works—now fully finalised. For a long time it has been recognised by the Borough Council that the most dangerous spot in W T airoa in regard to motor traffic is the bead of Paul street, where live roads junction, just in the track of children going to and from the schools. The Borough Council has succeeded now in securing permission for the corner known as "Dr. John's Corner" to be splayed back to improve the visibility, and the work is to be undertaken at once. The public will greatly appreciate the promptness of the late Dr. Somerville's trustees in dealing with this matter. The Mayor, Mr. .11. L. Darker, reported to the Wairoa Borough Council meeting that Mr. Corbett, Napier, had given valuable information in connection with. Wairoa's projected .sewerage scheme, in regard to the pumping methods. The estimated cost for tile population of the Wairoa, Borough is approximately £40,000. The council, so far, has not'gone beyond the taking of the levels. It will be remembered that last Anzae Day the Wairoa R.S.A. presented to the Borough Council an address of appreciation of all it had done for the ex-service men. This, neatly framed, is now hung in the council chambers, and at Friday night's meeting it was decided to send a, letter of thanks to the R.S.A.

Although the Wairoa County Council does not much regret, losing to the Government the driving license fees, it is not so with the Borough Council. That body has decided to issue a protest to the Government. Exception is being taken also to the practice of issuing number plates without ascertaining first whether the applicant has a license from the council to ply as a taxi, apd jnore than one has been reported to be doing so. . ' In the report of the last meeting of the Wairoa County Council it was shown that, that body 'declined to vote £25 towards the cost of the Wairoa public library on the ground that it had no funds for the purpose. The W r airoa Borough Council has granted its £,_s, and opinion has been expressed that the sister bodv should reconsider its decision seeiug that more country than townj people use the library, and in addition a good deal of trouble is given to the j librarian selecting and parcelbng up i books for the country. It has been hinted that the subscription rate for residents in the country may be raised to meet the situation. The Wairoa Cricket Association has been granted permission by the Borough. Council to improve the Clyde "Domain ground for cricket matches. The W r airoa Borough Council's balance sheet, which awaits audit, shows that the cash position has improved during the year to the extent of £3OO, and the deficiency last year has been reduced by £IOOO. The amalgamation of local bodies in New Zealand will not come about if the views of the '"Waifba.
