DANGER OF DICTATORS
AN OUTSPOKEN BISHOP CRITICISM OF HITLER "DOSS-HOUSE DREAMER" (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 29, 12 noon) LONDON, May 28. A scarcely-veiled reference, to Herr Hitler was made by the Bishop of Birmingham, Dr. E. W. Barnes, speaking in London.
lie said: "Recenfc Continental history shows bow even a public-house politician and doss-house dreamer can get a clientele which swells dangerously in times of public emotion and disorder.
"When a dictator has as many followers as he can pay, he can create armies dnd munitions actually on a rake's progress. This must end in bankruptcy or revolution, or, possibly, a successful war. If there is a chance of a war averting his downfall, a dictator plunges."
Referring to Italy, Dr. Barnes added: "Signor Mussolini's attempts to force up the birth-rate are pathetic. Quality, not quantity, is important. I was recently in Palermo, which is a huge slum. People who think, feel increasingly reluctant to breed children for cannon fodder."
