TAXATION OF FARMERS
CANTERBURY OPINIONS CONFERENCE REMITS (Per Press Association.) ASHBUBTOX, this day. Principal remits curried at the Mid-Canterbury conference of the Farmers' Union yesterday weue as follows: — That the farmer be taxed only on his equity in property and be permitted to'deduct from the income and emergency taxes the amount he pays in land tax. That the notice of the Minister of Industries and Commerce be drawn to the serious position in regard to this year's wheat sowings owing to adverse weather, pointing out that if the farmer is not encouraged there will be a serious shortage next year. Mr. L. 0. Oakley was elected as president unopposed.
