BULL CHASES CONSTABLE
HAN-HUNT INTERRUPTED HURRIED RETREAT IN „ SCRUB
•Sidelights of the police search at Rukumoana, Hawke's Bay, for a young Maori suspected of being concerned in the thefts of curs at Hamilton and Westshore, provided some interest to the few spectators. While in a scrub-covered paddock, one of the constables engaged in the search attracted the attention of a large bull, which showed its resentment at the. intrusion into its domain by immediately lowering its head and charging furiously at the officer.
Deciding that discretion was by far the better part of valour, the constable hurriedly ceased operations and set off at high speed for the nearest fence, the bull hot in pursuit. With little or no respect for the majesty of the law, the animal sped after him, and the chase entered thickly-growing send). Here the constable was able to make better time and rapidly drew away from his pursuer, who soon gave up the chase and concentrated on wrecking several manuka bushes. The search was continued in the adjoining paddock on the principle that no-one would willingly stay in the same enclosure as the fiery-tempered bull.
