WINTER FEED SHORTAGE
POSITION IN OTAGO Consequent on the unfavourable season in South Otago and .Southland, turnip crops have .been, seriously affected. There has been an excessive amount of moisturo and roots in most instances are very small. A good many farmers, as :i result will be short of winter feed, and they will have to supplement what turnip crops they may have by feeding their sheep, especially hoggets, on oaton sheaves. This will entail a good deal of extra work on farmers, who are agreed that districts south of Dunodin have experienced the. worst, season in living memory.
It is fortunate, howovor, that there is a good deal of rough feed in the pastures, and this will help to carry the stock on into the winter. The wet season lias, however, had a. favourable effect on land in Central Otago, where farmers have, experienced an exceptional year for all cereal and root crops.
