World's Fashion Centre
MEWS from London states that Englishwomen are no longer looking to Paris for their fashion outfits, as they can be turned out quite as smartly in London to-day as anywhere in the world. There was a time when it was considered to bo the "correct thing" to have one's clothes made in Paris, but that is not so now, for London is rapidly becoming the world's fashion centre, and is attracting buyers from all over the world. For one thing, no better cloths are manufactured than those in Britain. For another thing, the dress designers of London to-day have no superiors. Names like Hartnell and Tfussell are now mentiqned as representing the height, of fashion. Moreover, the London mannequins are described as " incomparable." The art of displaying a dress is hardly less important than that, of designing one. It is an art that is, in a sense, indefinable. ]t. requires more than beauty of face, and more than a beautiful figure; there must be "personality." ]t is, in a way, allied to the art of the stage. Beauty of face and figure are assets of great value, but if there bo no personal magnetism—that mysterious quality which is known as "It " —failure will result.
In recent years there has been a wonderful improvement in mannequin artistry, and it is coming to be regarded as a profession—profitable, as well as interesting work—in much the same way as film work is regarded.
