WAIROA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING ROADING REQUESTS (Herald Correspondent.) Those present at Wednesday's meeting of the Wairoa County Council were Crs. A. G. Nolan, chairman, W. ,T. Hill, S. A. Dickie, W. Tnit, (1. 12. Ormond, ,T. Tait and K. T. Carroll. On the representation of the .ActingPrime Minister, the Hon. J’. Fraser, and the Wairoa Borough Council, the council voted £25 to the King George V Memorial Fund.

The Main Highways Board advised that the hoard could not agree to the council's request for a contribution towards the cost of the proposed sto.ck bridge attached to the Wairoa Ifiver railway bridge.—The council decided to send a copy to the Wairoa Borough Council stating that the road bridge was not on a highway and asking the council to increase its proportion of costs. .

The district engineer is to lie supplied with a list of liabilities against main roads and highways voles. The Native Department wrote enclosing a copy of a letter sent to the department by the Erigiueer-in-Cliief of the Public Works Department setting out the basis on which approval would be given to the metalling of the Ngamotu (Kiliitu) road, estimated to cost £1277. —A copy to be sent to Flaxmills, Limited. Permission was granted to the Native Department, Gisborne, to lay water pipes across the Mohaka-Putere road provided the work was done to the satisfaction of the engineer. Councillors had no comment, to make on the new allocation of motor drivers’ licenses. The council made little put of it. and it took up a great deal of the stall’s time. Tunanui Road Mr. 12; L. A renewal of a slaughtering license for export for Messrs. Swifts, Limited, was granted.

Mr. J, S, Jessop applied for 800 euli. yds.’ of metal' to be spread on Waihi road, which was 'also used by the Public Works Department in patrolling Die. electric transmission line.— This was dealt with.

The Wairoa Mechanics’ Institute naked the council to make an annual grant of £2O towards its funds.—

The council decided that it had not funds available.

Mr. C. E. Conn suggested that the council should consider making provision on the current year’s estimates for linking up the metal at Mungapoike road from Maliarctu bridge to the Ngaio. —Details were given of the council’s proposals to make up the cost, Cr. Dickie putting forward another claim for the bridge. The chairman said the Government was giving £ISOO and the council asked the settlers to provide £SOO, but they had now withdrawn the £250 first agreed

..Mr. Reuben Waerea was granted permission to lay water pipes across the Nuhaka-Wairoa road at lahaeuui.

The chairman was appointed the delegate to the conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association in Wellington in August. Cr. W. Tait suggested as a remit that 2d out of the 8d wages tax should he paid to the hospital hoards. The chairman said it might be worth a trial, but the national health scheme might make it unnecessary. Tt was agreed to support the Makeri Countv Council’s resolution urging that the provisions of the Local Government Amalgamation Schemes Bill should be amended to provide for a poll of ratepayers being taken on amalgamation proposals. The Controller of Aviation advised that an endeavour should be made by the local bodies to select several alternative sites for an aerodrome at Wairoa. and suggested that the pilots of Cast Coast Airways might give valuable guidance in their selection.—The letter was received. , On behalf of the owners of l’akowhai block Mr. Grupene Poutahi applied to have an area of roadline taken by proclamation on May 5, 1913, and not required for actual road purposes revested hi the native owners.—lt was decided to reply that the council had no power ! in the matter.

Messrs. Clark and Son applied for an increase in the price of screened river metal being delivered under contract No. 2/38, owing to additional requirements stipulated by the engineer in regard to the size of the metal, and also requested that the term of the contract be extended to live years. —lt was left to the chairman and clerk to come to some arrangement. Mr. 11. A. Mossrnan inquired if legalisation of Woodlands station access road laid been completed.—-The clerk replied in the affirmative.

It was stated that the committee on stalling would report at the July meeting. The chairman said the engineer was busy on a live-year, plrfn for the Public Works Department and it'would he a help to the council.
