A frost of .8 degrees was registered in Gisborne this morning.

An accident of an unusual nature, involving a collision between a car, a buggy, and a. bicycle, occurred at 11.5 p.m/ yesterday in upper Childers road and as a result one of the passengers in the buggy, -Miriam Marks, aged 14, was admitted to the Cook Hospital sulfering from a fractured leg. Mrs. Marks, her son, Mr. Albert Marks, and her daughter, who reside at the Awapuni pa, were passengers in the buggy and it was fortunate that the outcome ot the accident was not more serious. The right rear wheel of the buggy was smashed and the other parts of the vehicle also suffered. A cousin of the Marks' family, Mr. Thomas Wilson, who was riding abreast of the buggy on a bicycle was thrown off his machine, but suffered no injury. Mrs. Marks received a blow on the head in falling and, though dazed, was able to return home. Miss Marks was conveyed to the hospital in the St. John ambulance. The driver of the car was Mr. Walter John Simpson, 45 Lyndhurst street, but he received no injury and the wing of his ear was only slightly dented. The condition of Miss Marks this morning was reported to be satisfactory and she was fairly comfortable.

Eight men appeared recently before Mr. E. 1.. Walton, 8.M., in the Police Court at Whakatane and were fined varying amounts for breaches of the Licensing Act. Constable I). J. Cummings prosecuted. As a result of the barman, Robert Basket, providing the handy-man, John Pirie, with 30 bottles of beer that were sold later to a party of Maoris, the. licensee of the Te Tek'o Hotel, Thomas B. Dunderdalo, was charged with selling liquor after closing hours, lie pleaded guilty to vaenrious responsibility and was fined £1 and costs ,£1 4s. Basket, on a charge of selling liquor after hours, was fined £2 and costs £1 4s. Pirie. was charged with illegally supplying liquor to natives arid was convicted and fined £5 and costs £1 4s. For aiding and abetting in the offence of supplying liquor to natives, l'iini Teamo, Peta Naiaro, John Auderson, Jimmy Hika, Sam Kakara, and Teira Hornone were each convicted and fined £2 and costs £1 9s.

Charged with an unnatural offence on a boy on April 27, a pensioner, James Alexander Denny, aged 62, appeared this morning before Mr. 15. Ik "Walton, S.M., in the Police Court and was remanded to appear at Gisborne on dune 2. Detective f". P. Belton prosecuted, and defendant, was represented by Mr. S. V. Beatifoy.

X furnished four-roomed cottage in Wainui road wan completely destroyed by fire at 5.30 a.m. to-day. The outbreak was first noticed by Mr. Kani Ferris and at that stage the verandah bad been burnt and the flames were obtaining a bold on the interior. The bouse was owned by Mrs. Hautonga Rangi. and had not been occupied for the past two years. As far as could be learned, there, was no insurance on the property.

A youth, Mick Walker, was admitted to probation for 13 months and ordered to make restitution of the value of the clothes when be appeared this morning in the Police Court before Mr. I'!. L. Walton, S.M., on a charge of the theft on April 1 at Tarndale of a suit of clothes valued at £4 15s, the property of William Bel ward Leslie. Accused pleaded guilty. Detective G. A. McWhirtcr. who prosecuted, said that the clothes bad been sold at a second-hand shop in Gisborne for 10s and were not recoverable. Walker was at present employed at Waimata, and had promised to pay for the stolen articles in a short time.

Referring to the abolition of riding accounts in the Waiapu County, the chairman, Cr. D. W. W. Williams, stated to yesterday's meeting of the council that, "under this system a uniform general rate might now be levied upon all rateable property within the county and provide a common fund with whicli to pursue a progressive policy of road improvement and other works throughout the county. The abolition of riding accounts had been adopted by a large number of counties within the Dominion and was in keeping with the desire of the 'Government which had stated its intention of making such a step compulsory in the near future.''

Of special interest in connection with the campaign to make the King George V memorial fund an outstanding success is the proposal of the Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club. which has accepted tho invitation of the Mayor to conduct a full day's selling in Gisborne on behalf of the appeal. The club has arranged for Government approval of a special flag for the occasion, and buyers of these emblems will uc invited to use them in forming a loyal design on the sward of the Read's quay esplanade, adjacent to the Returned Soldiers' Association's offices. The plot will be under supervision throughout the day, and supporters of the movement will be given opportunities for planting their tlags at any time between sunrise and sunset, according to the club's scheme, which will be put into effect on June 3.
