ASSAULT AT DANCE
FINE OF £lO IMPOSED "I have intimated before that .in osises of drunkenness and assault at dances the penalty would be severe." said Mr. J. H. Salmon. S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court at Wangamu to Albert Charles Allen, who was charged on two counts of assault, one against Peter Wi Wi, and the other against Rangi Tawaroa. The magistrate fined the acuseed £5 on each charge, and said that in the event of e repetition of the offence there would be no fine. Senior-Sergeant L.. E. Capp said the incident occurred at a dance at Kaiwhaiki on Saturday night. The accused approached oiie of the men concerned and without provocation struck him. He approached the other man and asked if he had a bottle of whisky. The Maor' replied that he did not. and the accused struck him. When arrested by the police accused was under the influence of liquor. Counsel for the accused, Mr. J. M. Hussey, said this was Allan's first time before the court. The trouble arose through another white man taking the bottle of whisky at the dance.
