GENERAL INCREASE

AUCKLAND RETURNS A. general - increase in customs, ancl; excise duty and also in sale tax is shown: in the returns of Auckland collections for April compared with those for the corresponding month last year., Customs diity, including motor spirit duty .arid tire duty, totalled £330,755, an increase, of £65,1*53 over the figure ,of £315,602 for April, 1936. The total from these sources for the first four, juohths of the present year was £1,409,972. compared with £i;318,610 in the corresponding- period last year. The combined receipts of motor spirit dutvand tire,dfty in April amounted to £72/147, or £16,&.'3 more than the figure of £55,154 for April, 1936. . Excise oil beer collectec , ' in April amounted to £14,267, £12,385 in April last Vciir, a rise of £IBB2.

Sales tiix in April produced £92.296. a. rise of £23.072 oyer the total of £69.224 collected iu April. 1936. For the first four months, of .the present year the sales tax has, amounted, to ..£321,964,. against £263.239 in the corresponding period of 1936, a difference of £68,725.

WELLINGTON RECEIPTS

The customs figures for Wellington for April are as follows, those for April, 1936, being given in parentheses:—Customs revenue, £286.349 (£276,460); motor spirit. £72,842 (£62,573); tyre tax, £1716 (£1892); sales tax, £106,312 (£92.173); beer excise, £6320 (£4789).
