ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

PROMISING NEWCOMERS SATURDAY'S LOCAL GAMES'; Keen and interesting games were witnessed by Association football enthusiasts on Saturday at the Childers Road Reserve, a pleasing feature of the matches being the appearance, of some promising young players in the senior Both Thistle and Thistle A, in their game on No. 1 ground, produced their shave of newcomers, most of whom gave good exhibitions, though naturally lacking the finesse of the more experienced men. The executive is to be complimented on the results of its effort to balance, the two senior teams by including a proportion of the new talent in each, the result of the match, a draw with a score of two-all, giving a fair indication of the run of the game. At the interval, Thistle were leading by two goals to one, but their opponents, by determination and good play, managed to draw level in the concluding stages. Dixon scored both, goals for Thistle, and Hazell and Burns goalcd, for Thistle A. Mr. J. Mohan capably controlled the game. FAST FORWARD PLAY United. spts Mercantile .. lpt A good crowd watched tho early game between United and Mercantile, and the old rivals provided some very interesting There was not the difference in the teams which the score of five-one in favour of United suggested. Although tho whole team played well, the margin in Unitcd'a favour can be mainly :nttributed to fine leading aip work by Samson. This was taken full advantage of by Bridge, whoso speed proved, disconcerting to Mercantile'. 1 ? defence. Many new faces were noted in the teams, which have taken every advantage to build up their strength, and thereare prospects for the most successful season for several years. Mercantile has a valuable blending of old and new players, and with coaching should develop into a really smart team. United fielded more of their old hands, but with the new men shaping well it should weld into a strong combination. Play throughout the game was fast and clean. Bridge scored four of the goals for United, the other being secured by C'allaghan. Mercantilc's goal was secured by a promising young player, i Hepburn.'
