DOMESTIC AID
PROBLEM IN BRITAIN FOREIGN GIRLS OBTAINED LONDON, April 18. A crisis, aggravated by the demand for rearmament labour and the needs of the Coronation, has developed in domestic service in Britain. The modern British girl is refusing to accept domestic work. She objects to the servility of domestic service and prefers the higher pay, shorter hours and extra freedom* obtainable in factory and office employment. In ensequence, caterers, and hotels find British waitresses and barmaids unobtainable for the Coronation rush and are hastily importing thousands of Austrian, Czech, German girls under Ministry of Labour permits. A big percentage" pf Coronation guests will be served with beer or food by girls speaking onlv a few words of English, Already Austrian and German girls are forming their own organisations, while big colonies of foreign girls have also been established in the provinces. As evidence of the aeuten,e'ss. of the language difficulty, it is announced that a handbook, printed in English and German, entitled "Mistress and Madchen," will be available next week to help British employers. British farms have almost been depleted of female labour, which has been diverted to armament, factories.
