AMATEURS ON RESERVE

INTER CLUB ATHLETICS GISBORNE-OPOTIKI MEET ENJOYABLE SPORT PROVIDED. An enjoyable afternoon’s sport was provided on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday when a visit was received by the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club from an Opotlki Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club team. The strength of the visiting team was affected just prior to their, departure owing to difficulties oyer the transport arrangements. The meeting was late in starting, but once under way the officials lost no time in dispatching their large programme.

The 220yds handicap was won by G. Quinn, the New Zealand titleholder for the distance, in 22 1-ssec, equalling his best local time for the distance, which was established in 1935. The high jump was won by W. Wallace with a jump of sft Tin from G. Tlffen. Tiffen jumped sft Gin and then called his next jump. When the bar was raised to sft Bin, his call, he failed to clear and the decision went to Wallace. The shorter distance senior cycle events were won by S. Parker from O. Sutton, but Sutton timed his sprint well to beat his opponent in tiie threemile event. L. Bell had no difficulty in winning the half-mile junior cycle scratch race. The Opotlki visitors were all well in the hunt, and the most consistent of the male runners was Stewart. Storer and King figured in the cycling and Miss M.
