PLANE DOWN IN PIT TRIP FOR. PHOTOGRAPHS (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. Further details of the aeroplane crash at Staveley yesterday afternoon when a Spartan owned by New Zealand Airways, Limited., was .wrecked, show that Air. John Kilian, the pilot, was taking Air. C. L. Austin, the. owner of the farm, up to. photograph the property. The plane in the take-off, cleared a fence and then entered a down draught, striking a pile of shingle and falling into a gravel pit. The plane broke into two, the engine falling to the bottom of the pit. Oil round the engine caught fire, but water at the bottom of the pit quickly extinguished the flames. Alert working nearby helped the pilot to extricate Air. Austin, whose scalp .wound necessitated several stitches. .
