TURF CLUB RACES

HURDLES TO JAZZ KING EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE HUNTETTE’S hack r |']io Poverty Bay Turf; Club’s summer meeting was continued at the Park course to-dav with fin excellent attendance of the public, the lawn presenting a. brighter spectacle than toi several seasons. The track was in excellent order and, despite the prospects of moderate scratchiugs, the fields promised to lie satisfactory throughout, the course of the day’s programme. Club officials anticipated a further rise in the_ totalisator investments arid the first race with only three horses, but a substantial pool, gave rise to. the view that this expectation would lie realised.

'The Second Hurdles Handicap was won by .laz.z King, winner of the corresponding event on tHG first day, who occupied second position the "renter part, of the race, but put in a strong finish to beat Royal Mimic by a length. Roy a 1 Mimic spoiled a good chance by faulty jumping on the . first circuit, blit picked up his feet well during , the last, half-mile. The Cook Hack Handicap produced a fine 1 finish, the placed" horses being separated by margins of a neck and the fourth being close up at* the judge s box. The ' favourite, Huntetlc, _ duly repaid her supporters with a Stirling effort, which won her the race, Blygain being second and Tycoon third. Clay Hunter seemed to be the unlucky runner of the race, for after tailing flio field for four and a half furlongs he put in a fine run and was just out of a place. Had he made a good start he certainly would have been in tho money. JOCKEY SUSPENDED A meeting of the judicial committee of the club was held to inquire into an allegation of interference in the 'Harbour Hack Handicap on the first day of the meeting. The allegation was laid against .1. tV ilsh, rider of Tycoon, and the committee after hearing evidence decided that interference by Walsh with. Blygain, ridden by R. Marsh, had been proved. The -committee accordingly suspended Walsh for one month on the grounds of careless riding under rule 289 of the rules of racing. SECOND HURDLES HANDICAP of £00; second horse, £ls; third, £10; over seven flights ol hurdles; lj miles. 2 JAZZ'KINO, Mrs. W. Torhett’s br.g., aged, Hunting.. Seng— Kowerewere, 11.6 (A. E. The retirement of Holme Fell left only three to contest tins hurdles event and each or these received fairly solid support. Royal Mimic shading Jazz. King by 20 tickets, and Summerhill being another 50 tickets behind in third position on the totalisator.

From a level. start the three runners got away nicely, Royal Mimic rising first to the initial jump, with the other two on even terms. Royal Mimic's leid was increased to four lengths on the ■first, bend, where S'liimiierhiU was lying in second position. The leader was well out to the front coming into the straight, but screwed badly at the jump, just before reaching the stand and lost sonic ground there. He still retained a lead of a length over Jazz King as they passed the judges for the first time, isnnunerhill lying a close third and the threo turning out of the straight, closely bunched. Another bad jump oil the east beiul saw Royal Mimic lose the lead to Jazz King, biit, making good use of his pace on the flat, the Mimetic gelding again went, to the front entering the hack stretch. Jazz, King was only half a length away, but Buminerhill Was falling back and was five lengths in arrears when they came- to the jump in the stretch. From this stage oil the race resolved itself into a tussle between Jazz. King and Royal Mimic, the pair rising to the last hurdle practically on terms and the top-Weight going on to win by a length, With S.ununerhill at least 10 lengths behind Royal Mimic. Time, 3min. 15 4-ssdc. COOK HACK HANDICAP, of £s.">; second horse, £10; third, £5; (i furlongs. I—J-lUNTETTE, C. G. AnceU’s b. m., 4yrs., Hunting Soifg—Uynette, 8.9, (P. Atkins), 1 4--BLYGAIN, W. In the best pool of the meeting to this stage Hrintetto and Royal Minstrel contested favouritism for the first lint event of to-day, the Cook Hack Handicap, the first-mentioned being a little ahead when the rn'aehinC closed, while Gay Hunter; Blygain, Brftwn Lap and Tycoon all had substantial backinge for the event. The field lined up quietly' enough, ) but in the jump out Gay Hunter was unlucky' and did not get away well. The first thrift out wftrft Blyghin, Brown Lap arid Hnritctte, with Royal i Minstrel fourth. Positions changed quickly in the first furlong, however, and at five furlongs tlie 3ead was then held jointly by Rlygain and lluntctto, with Royal Minstrel arid Brown Lap together a length and a half further hack, then Tycoon, Collision anti Gay Hunter, the latter being well backTurning round the wist bend the positions were identical with those mentioned above find tlii grips between tlii runners were nVuili .the Writhe, the first four appearing to have cVirvthirig their own way. Huntettp on the inside made a beautiful thru fit the entrance to the straight, and Bly'gairi likewise gave nothing away in the matter of lost ground. Once they were straightened out Tycoon and Gay ■ Hunter, came through 1 with a rrisli, however, and began to look like troubling the others. In a spirited finish Huntotte battled off Blygain to win by a neck, while(Tycoon got within a rieck of tho second placed runher and Gay'Hunter was a close fourth. Royal 'Minstrel finished fifth, Collision sixth, arid Brown Lap last, Time , 1 min. Msec.
