FIRE IN WAIROA
PLUMBING SHOP BURNT BRIGADE'S GOOD WORK (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The fire brigade was called out at 2.30 a.m. to-day to extinguish a fire at the rear of Mr. 0. Johansen's ironmongery shop, Marine parade. The scene of the fire was a congested area at the Bank of New South Wales corner at the south end of the Wairoa. River bridge. The brigade was quickly on the spot and confined the lire to the plumbing and painting department at the rear, effecting a good save of the valuable, ironmongery department. A good deal of damage was done to the stock of paint, paper and glass, besides the machinery. It is understood that there are some insurances, but the amounts are not available here.
The residence of the family just behind was badly scorched, and Mrs. %Tohansen, who is an invalid, and her nurse were removed to a neighbouring house, where they received kind attention.
