LEAGUE LOSS REGRETTED
AUSTRALIA JN COUNCIL OUTSTANDING- INFLUENCE SERVICE OF MR. BRUCE (Elec. Tfel. Copyriebt.—United Proas Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 7, 3 p.m.) London, Oct. 6. An Associated Press message from Geneva stated that the Australian, delegate,. Mr. S. M. Bruce, suggested that the League Assembly should authorise the Council to appoint, from the economic and financial committee's, a small consultative body with power to co-opt members from outside, for instance from the United States of America, which could act as a focal point for the investigation of economic problems when required. However, he stressed that the first steps should be taken by the great Powers, especially the creditor Powers. Mr. Bruce added'that he considered Mr. W. S. Morrison, the financial secretary to tho British Treasury, had overs! ressed the importance of acting slowly as time was now of the utmost, importance. It is stated in Geneva that although tho personnel of the Economic Committee is outstanding, Mr. Brrice's speech generally is regarded as the most valuable contribution thus far offered. It is generally regretted that Australia is no longer a meinber of the Council, as not only Mr. Bruce but also Mr. MacDbugia.il and other permanent- Australian delegates have rendered the greatest service to the League. Australia s work in the field of nutrition and economics has been outstanding in results and her influence on League affairs has probably been greater than that of any of the other Dominions.
