WAIROA NEWS
(Herald Correspondent.) In connection with the visit to Wairoa of Mrs. Andrew Paterson, Auckland, the Herald's representative recalls that her father took unique measures to secure the safety of his wife and himself on the occasion of tho murderous raid by Te. Kooti on Mohaka on April 10, 1869. It was not known for several clays whether or not Te Kooti would be advancing on Wairoa by way of Waihua and the beach. Accordingly, tho whole of Wairoa's scanty population slept in the redoubt on the site of the present County Council Chambers. The late Mr. Ldwin Carter, the then big merchant of Wairoa, transported bags of sugar, flour and maize to the stockade to fortify it instead of waiting to fill sand bags. However, Te Kooti did not come.
