ARREST AFTER 8 YEARS
ABSCONDER FROM BAIL ALLEGATION OF THEFT (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. Eight years after lie hud absconded from bail at Christehureh, William Joseph Fox, known in Tnranaki as John Baden Welsh, was arrested .".t Whangamoniona early litis week. He appeared in court at New Plymouth to-day to answer tho original charge that at Christehureh on February L\ 11)28, he stole ;i I rot ting sulky and harness valued a! £l2 from Samuel Bennett. Fox then palled himself John Blake Keo'nan. After his release on bail in 102 S, Fox disappeared. lie visited Australia,, but. returned to Nov.- Zealand and for some time had been managing a farm at Whnngnmomona. ■His employer spoke highly of him, and oifered to retain his services. Fox had married and hits three children.
Counsel said there was a possibility of a sound defence to the charge, but in view of his circumstances Fox threw himself on the mercy of the court.
The court granted probation for 12 months and ordered restitution of £5.
