FORTNIGHTLY MEETIN G SHORT BUSINESS LIST The Dishorno Borough Council met last night, there being present: The Mavor. Mr. D. W. Coleman, ALP., Crs. It. ‘ Holmes, .1. Webb. D. S. Thompson. .1. 11. Mall. M. H. Maude, D. M. Do Costa, and X. M. Hull. The Poverty Bay Turf Club applied for the use of the Park Domain on October 29 and 31. —The application was granted on the same terms as before.

The Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club wrote asking the council io quote for the culling of grass on the Childers Road Reserve once a fortnight from October .1 to March 31.; — The Mayor said ihat he understood that no contractor had the requisite plant for this purpose, and on his motion the matter was referred to the works committee for consideration.

The Gisborne Harbour Board applied for permission to install a septic tank on the council's property in the vicinity of the signal station, — The. Mayor said that the engineer believed that construction of a septic tank could be obviated.—The matter was referred to the sanitation oommiltee.

Messrs. Nolan and Sheet wrote asking for dedication of an area of land in Leith street as . a public road.— Dedication was accepted. The vector of the Gisborne High School wrote inviting members of the council to be present at the school sports on Friday.—lt was decided to accept the invitation, and as many councillors ns possible would be present.

Messrs. Grant and Cooke wrote asking permission to subdivide a suburban section containing 2d perches, or as an alternative permission to erect a small dwelling on the section, on which an attached shop ami dwelling was already erected. —The matter was referred to the works committee for a report. A tender of £ls 10s, plus sales tax, delivered in Gisborne, front Mr. W. P. Windust, Auckland, for the supply ol dog collars was accepted. This was the lowest of three tenders. REPORTS WORKS COMMITTER Tn its report Ibe works committee stated : “Contemplated works.—A. list of contemplated works for the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, the principal works being completing of. work in connection with Hospital Hill road and Kniti septic tank outfall drain, “Building permit.—An application for permission to add a bathroom to an existing dwelling situated 18in. from the boundary was considered, and the eom : rnittoe recommends that- permission be granted to erect this addition on the same alignment as the present building.”

E N GIN E E R’S B E PORT The engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, slated:—

“Roads.—Gravel maintenance, has boon carried out on Ihe following streets. — Sheridan street, Mangapapa, Massey, Lyttou and Chalmers roads. Hospital Hill road : The spawling and super-elevat-ing of corners and the placing of a macadam surface in readiness for scaling should lie completed during the week. The, application of a priming coat will be put, in hand immediately Ibis work is completed. “Footpaths.-—Gravel has been spread on sections of footpath in Aberdeen road and Cobdcn street. “Kniti septic tank outfall drain.—Now that tidal conditions interfere little with this work, very satisfactory progress is being made. To date 517 ft. of drain lias been laid and at this rate of progress the work should he nearing completion within six weeks. Mcßae Bath.—The overhaul of pumps in readiness for the coming season is in hand. Painting and other necessary work around the buildings will hr completed prior to the opening date.” INSPECTION COMMIT']’EE The inspection committee reported:— “The several matters referred to the committee for inspection and report were considered, and ihe following recommendations are made: — “Shelter shed, Ormond road.—That this shelter be cit in half, and one section removed lo Mangapapa road and the other to Hospital road. “Railing, Read’) quay, riverbank.— The estimated cost of erecting a suitable protective feme along the wharf front opposite th; R.S.A. rooms is £OO, and ihe committee is unable to recommend Hi is expenditure in the meantime. In its opirion other sections of the riverbank aid wharf are just as much a source of danger to children as lliis particular mo. “Kingsley road.—lt is considered the gravelled suvfrce of this road is sufficiently wide erough to accommodate the small anioint. of traffic using tlie road. Many Jther by-streets in the borough are in a similar position, and, therefore, no recommendation is made.

“Stout .street fodwny, eastern end. —Tho estimated cott of effecting permanent improvemeits to this footway is £540, and whilst it is agreed that the work is necessity, the committee considers the question should be held over until next y@r’.s estimates are being considered, aid recommends accordingly. “Excess rubbish clean-up week. — During the recent clean-up week residents in some iiisljnces had deposited on the road side jor removal by the eonne.il, bulky matirials,,.sueh as parts of old motor veil ides.
