AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB

17TH ANNUAL MEETING A GOOD ATTENDANCE PATRON REVIEWS SEASON There was a good attendance of members and supporters ol the Gisborne Amateur Athletic ami Harrier Club at the annual meeting, held in the club rooms last, evening. The patron, Mr. If. F. Forster, presided. Apologies for absence were received from Miss J. White, Messrs. W. M. Jenkins. L. Grey, <’• H. Dawson, and I’. Hockley. in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman said it, gave him great pleasure to endorse the committee’s review of the year’s activities. The report did not call for a great deal of comment. Unfortunately, the floodlight sports had been marred by the succession of wet nights, in view of the unfavourable season the committee was to be congratulated on pulling the club through, lie was confident that if the members continued to support the dub and if weather conditions were more favourable, public interest in the floodlight sports meetings would nokj.be lacking. Undoubtedly the weekly meetings were of benefit to the club.

The speaker declared that, every .supporter ol the ciul) must realise that the club’s good position was largely due to the efforts of the chairman of the committee. Mr. \V. M. Wildish, who had displayed great- spirit despite the many difficulties. Referring to the contests with outside teams. Mr. Forster said (he club had had the misfortune to suffer defeat in the Hawke's Bay Herald Finch] competition, but its against this there was the club s success at Opotiki, where a banner had been annexed in competition with Hamilton, Opotiki and Rotorua athletes. STILL SOME CHAMPIONS It was pleasing to note that the dub still had some athletes in the championship class. Messrs. Quinn and Grey already had been publicly congratulated on their performances at the i\ew Zealand championships, while the chib was also proud that four of its members bad won centre championships. The fact that the expenses for the year totalled £2OB, and only £53 was received from gate takings showed what a large amount of money had been raised by the committee with the assistance of the ladies, as well as by donations. He thanked the ladies for the great impetus they had given to the social side of the club’s activities. Mr. W. Campbell seconded the motion. It was pointed out by Mr. C. K. Brown that if the club members only realised the amount, of work and time that had been given by Mr. Wildish, they would know what a fine chairman of the committee they had had in him. He appealed to the members to give greater support to the club’s activities.

Mr. Wildish also stressed the need for greater co-operation from the athletes. He stated that at the conclusion of the track season interest in the club dropped off, and it was then that the committee had to make up. the financial deficit. He instanced a recent club dance at which there had been present outside of the committee only two athletes. He appealed to the athletes to rally to the club’s assistance in the off season.

The motion for the adoption of the report and balance-sheet was carried unanimously.
