HIGHWAYS IN BOROUGHS
POSITION IN GISBORNE FUTURE CONTROL Consideration of a proposal that sections of main highways through sparsely populated portions of boroughs should be taken over by the Public Works Department was given by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. v The Government proposes to take over arterial roads through counties and the smaller boroughs, and Cr. H. E. Maude suggested last night that the Minister should be asked to take over also sections through sparsely populated parts of larger boroughs. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that the Minister was anxious that there should be no gaps in the highway system, and might be encouraged to adopt the suggestion. The policy in this respect had not been decided, however, but Mr. Coleman did not think that Gisborne would gain anything. Gisborne had bitiiminiscd its highways, and secured a share of the petrol tax, the amount from which might be no less than the benefit which might accrue by the Government taking the roads over. However, the Mayor said he would refer the suggestion to the Minister.
