While walking, up a right-of-way in Ilataitai, Wellington, on Thursday, Mis. ft, T. j. Coleman was suddenly accosted bv a man, who struck her on the head with a heavy instrument and made off with her purse. Although her hat. saved her to some extent, Mrs. Coleman received a cut about 2in. long on the back of her head.
An Invercargill resident received an unpleasant surprise when digging bis garden. Ho was trenching it to a fair depth when ho unearthed a. smoothed slab of stone which proved to bo a tombstone, engraved with Chinese characters. Inquiries revealed that there was once a monumental mason’s yard on tho site, and the tombstone is probably ono which remained unclaimed by a former Celestial resident of Invercargill.
Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Cuthbort left- Gisborne this morning for Auckland, on the first stage of their journey to Melbourne, where Mr. Cuthbort takes* up his new administrative post with the Victorian Electricity Commission within a few days. His successor in the post of engineer to tho Poverty Bay Electric Power Board, Mr. Frank Matthewson, will commence his employment with the hoard on November 1, and is at present concluding Ms work under the Southland Power Board. The administration of the Poverty Bay board’s affairs is at present in the hands of Mr. W. Boufke, the accountant, who will hand over to the new managing-secretary, Mr. It. P. Baigent, on October 19.
