LAWN TENNIS

TITIRANGI CLUB COURTS PROMISE WELL flood prospects for the new season are indicated in the annual report of the Titirangi Lawn Tennis Club, which records keen interest on the part of the members, and general co-operation in the scheme of court improvement. Conditions which caused the abandonment of last season's club championships and oilier competitions are not expected to recur, the courts having been specially treated to improve the drainage. The annual meeting- of the club is to be held on Wednesday evening; "It is regretted that owing to the inclement weather from February onwards the courts were not in as good a condition for play as obtained in the previous season and club championship,; and other competitions had to be abandoned," the report states, inter alia. "During the autumn and winter mouths a great deal of improvement and maintenance have been carried out. A complete system of drainage has been installed at no cost to the club, all courts have been topdressed and sown, and posts have been shifted, thus eliminating worn patches and giving a much better surface for the coming season. The grass has responded to the effects of the drainage, and the courts are already in excellent condition, and should stand up 1o a hard season's play.

"Finance. —Tin* finances of the (dub are still in a very sound position and although a loss is shown in the year's workings this is more than offset by increase in plant and fillings, which are in good order and condition for the forthcoming season. Sufficient soil is in hand for topdressing next year. This is always an expensive item. New wire-netting was erected, new nets purchased and many other improvements effected.

"Enter-club and Williams Shield matches. —Only two inter-club matches were played during the season, one against Whataupoko, in which our A. team was beaten !•"> mutches to !», and our 1? team 37-7, and the other with the Wairoa Club at Wairoa, in which we were successful, winning by 1.1-S). The dub competed in the "Williams Shield tournament, but owing to the inclement weather conditions if Mas only possible to play one match. This was played against Wairoa, in Gisbornc, and resulted in a win for Tilining), 14-10. The next game of tin; series was to be played against Te Hapara dub, but although, several attempts were made to get the match played the weather whs unkind on each occasion. The. winning team of this match was to play Tolaga Bay Club in the final.

"Miller stars.—P. Kami and A. Hampton won the .Miller Stars during the year and were successful in withstanding several challenges, finishing the season with the stars still in their possession. We have much pleasure in placing on record their performances, and recording our thanks to the ■donor of the stars. This competition has been the means of improving the standard of play in the district. A notable success was achieved by P. Kaua, who was also a member of the Gisborne Tennis Club, in winning the championship .singles of the dub. "Louis Cooper Cup.—The thanks of the club are. due to Mr. Louis Cooper, who at the beginning of the season donated a very fine cup and miniatures for a handicap combined doubles pompetition; and we congratulate Mrs. 0. Baker and Mr. U. Byrnes, (lie first winners of this coveted trophy. The dub is unfortunate in the loss of Mr. and .Mrs. L. Harris and Mr.. P. Kaua, who have been transferred from this district. The services of these players both on and off the courts will be sadly missed.

"Outstanding subscriptions. Outstanding subscriptions frolndhc previous season have .all been collected. Lis regretted that there are still a. few subscriptions outstanding for the current year, hut it is anticipated that these will all lie paid in the near future. "
