GARDENING CIRCLE (Herald Correspondent.) On Friday afternoon the Whatatutu Gardening Circle members gathered at the Women's Institute rooms lor then monthly meeting. Competition was keen, there being many entries for the various classes. The roll call, "A plant from your garden, named and its history if tiny." brought forth a good response. A lady's spray, the flowers and greencry bciug chosen by the competitors from a table laden with many kinds of flowers of bright and varied hues, was won by Mrs. C. Bradford, Mrs. F. Oman and Mrs. C. ("leaver being equal, second, and Miss 0. Russell fourth. Other awards were :—Tulips.—Mrs. J. Oman, i. Anemones.—Mrs. J. Oman, 1; Mrs. F, Howard. 2; Mrs. J. Murray and Mrs, A. Van Slyke, equal, 3. Howl of Iceland poppies.—Mrs. J. Oman, 1 ; Mrs. J. Sinton, 2; Mrs. F. Howard, 3. Lettuce.—Mrs. A. Shaw, 1; Mrs. J. Moore, 2: Mrs. J. Murray, 3. Radishes.—Mrs. C. Cleaver, 1.

Two new members were welcomed by the. circle. A tasty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Airs. J. King and Mrs.* A. AleLcod. The following members were present:—Alesdames F. Howard. A. AlcLeod, J. Sinton, J. Oman, .1. Moore, J. King, J. Murray, K. Tail,. A. Van Slyke. A. Shaw, C. Cleaver, and 0. Bradford; Misses F. Howard. A. Russell, and o'. Russell.

On Saturday afternoon the tennis season commenced in Whatatutu, the club entertaining Waerenga-a-hika and local players. Interesting games were enjoyed hy both onlookers and contestants. Unfortunately a very strong wind was blowing in the earlier part of the afternoon, but later the conditions become calmer, making play easier. The courts were in good order, the returfing at the base lines holding! well. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the local ladies. Among those present were the following players from Waerenga-a-hika: Air. and Airs. J. Torrie. Airs. Candy. Aliss Johnstone, Aliss Brett, Air. C. Gregg and Air. P. Jones. Others present were Alesdames K. Harris, C: Gaukrodgcr, H. Walker, D. Anderson. A. Shaw. R. Tait, and C. Bradford: Misses F. King, V. Seymour. R, Skilton, M. Tait, L. Shaw, S. Sevmour, A. Russell, and 0. Russell; Messrs. R. Allan, R. Rum, A. Campbell, and R. Whitehead.

On Saturday night the Women's Institute members held another of their enjoyable flag five-hundred evenings in the institute room, which was gaily decorated with vases of marigolds and lupin. A bright log fire, added lo the comfort of the players, and Mr. J. Robin supplied popular tunes on the piano. The first prizes were won bv Airs. E. Tait. Airs. C. Cleaver, Alr.'AL Oman, 1 and Mr. Te VVhetu, smaller prizes being annexed by Mrs. A. Shaw, Airs. J. King, Aliss W. Casey, .and Mr. J. Robin. Other players present, were Alesdames J. Casey, C. Cleaver, A. Shaw, E. Tait, J. Ralo. J. Robin, and J. King: Misses M. Tait, L. Shnw, At. Cleaver, B. Shaw, I. Cleaver and IT. Shaw; Messrs. J. Kincr, G. Camnbell, P. Pani, S. Robin, J. Robin. Parurn, R. Rum, C. Edmondson. J. Eparaima, and W. Cleaver. Tennis was enjoyed bv a number of future members of the Whatatutu club at the week-end, play beinti keen. Those present included Airs. E. Tail, Mrs. 0. P.radford ; Misses I. King, V. Sevmour. Af. Tait; ATessrs. S. Tepaa, A. Campbell, 0. Bradford, AI. Kahu, J. Eparaima, and R. Whitehead.
