TWO GOVERNMENTS FALL

CANADIAN ELECTIONS UTTER ROUT IN QUEBEC OTTAWA, Sept. 1. General elections' were held this summer in two Canadian provinces. In Quebec the administration was utterly routed, and in Manitoba it survives, but without a majority in the Legislature. Quebec had had a Liberal Government almost 40 years, led latterly by Mr. L. A. Taschereau, head of a distinguished French-Canadian family. An election was held .a year ago, and the Liberals were returned to power by a very narrow margin. When the Legislature mot, Mr. Maurice Duple.ssis, leader of what is called • the Nationale Party, fought the Government so vigorously that Mr. Taschereau resigned and Mr.'Adelard Godbout, a young farmer, succeeded him as Premier. Mr. Godbout dissolved the Legislature forthwith. In the ensuing election his party was badly beaten, and Mr. Duplessis has formed a Government.

In Manitoba, the Premier, Mr. John Bracken, head of a Liberal-Progressive group which held a clear majority in the last Legislature, emerged from the election with the largest group, but still in ,a minority, the Conservatives having the second-largest party. An arrangement will be made, it is expected, by which Mr. Bracken will continue as Premier, with the support of some of thoso elected in opposition to him, as all parties are unwilling to subject the province to another election at this time.
