(Horald Coi-respondisnt.) ■ ; With a financial membership of 66, the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce is now-truly representative of-the business interests of its district, and tit account of its activities during the past year-is bound to. "The chamber during.the year has ■brought up the following' matters:— (1) Improvement to the-iiotorua-Wni-kare'moaua road, on which considerable monev is now being spent: (-) the establishment of an aerodrome in Wairoa, which is being handled now* by the "W airoa Borough and County Councils;' (3) the reopening of the Mnrapnra-Whakatane road; (4) the qu'cs,(ion of chain stores, which is being considered by a commission;/ (5) -speed control of vehicles through AVairoa, which is covered in the new motor regulations; (6) railway crossing, To Uki Hill, which at present is well down the list of urgent crossings, but will'be dealt with-by the department when more urgent cases have been completed: (7)~ the question of the pbst.'office printing a combined WftiroaGisborne telephone directory, in reply 'to which the department advised that the cost would be prohibitive, but Gisborne directories were always available;' (S) the opening of the Taltaemti lime" : quarry, which the" department considered : a question for private enterprise; (9) office heating by electricity off peak load, which had not been finalised; (10) Hood-lighting Morere; (11) Mortgage Rehabilitation Act, special.provision being sought for returned soldier mortgagors; (12) adequate defence of New Zealand; (13) that the basic wage is too early at 21 and should not operate until 25; (14) -the construction of an easily accessible invalid bath' at Morere, whieh is being considered. '"the annual examinations in bookkeepings shorthand and typewriting ■were';held, and the chamber's thank*. are due to those who tic ted as supervisors. ; EAST COAST PUBLICITY, "The chamber is responsible for the issue of an East Coast publicity booklet, in conjunction Avith the chambers of Hastings, Napier, Gisborne, Opotiki .and .Wh'akatnhc, anil our thanks are due to Mr. Peterson, Rotorua, for organising work, and to the Government Tourist Department for (he loan of a photographer to take special photographs. The "idea took a lot of pushing at first, but all the chambers concerned have now taken the matter up most .enthusiastically.. The distribution of the booklet will embrace America, Australia, and other overseas sources of tourist traffic. It should be completed and issued by November, and should dp much to bring to the East Coast long overdue publicity. "At the beginning of the year Mr. Rateliffe, who had served the chamber for many, years as secretary, resigned, and Ms place was taken bv Mr. .T. J. Millar. "The incorporation of the chamber was completed during the year. The Associated Chambers continue to' do wonderful work, and individual members gain much by their membership of a chamber affiliated to" that body. "I would ask every member to obtain one now member during the coming year; increased membership means increased strength and increased efficiency, and I feel sure our membership will steadily increase as the value of the work, being done becomes more genorally known."
