On his latest visit lo the Bay of Plenty, Mr. D. MacGregor, tho Automobile Association's patrol, noted preparations for straightening the Waioeka Gorge, road at. a point, half a mile oh the Gisborne side ot Hamilton's homestead. The road at (his point takes a sharp turn in one direction, then swings quickly back, visibility being limited to a few yards at. two points. By erecting a concrete retaining-wall and making a deep filling, the Public Works Department proposes to straighten out the S-bond. and thus obviate a danger-point at which a number of accidents have occurred since the opening of I lie route as a main highway. Metal for the concrete wall is being secured at Ihe iiinciion of the Opatu Stream with the Waioeka, 11 miles from Matawai. where a hauler lias been installed by the contractor.
