FAR EAST WAR THREAT MOBILISATION OF CHINESE DEFIANCE OF JAPANESE NEGOTIATIONS RENEWED (Eire Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 3. 3 p.m.) SHANGHAI, Oct, 3. Fears of a Sino-Japanesc war have been intensified. The Nanking Government is reported to be mobilising huge forces. Over 70.C00 soldiers are guarding the Nankmg-llangkow-Shanghai rail system. Japanese marines have virtually occupied Hongkew. Tho British naval authorities are preparing; to evacuate British women and children from Yangtse ports in the event of an emergency. The possibility of a Japanese blockade of Yangtse ports is feared as a result of tho serious impasse in the Sino-Japauese negotiations. Tho firmness of China towards the Japanese demands has thrown Japanese diplomatic quarters into consternation, and they arc now pessimistic oi success. Tho negotiations have been renewed. The exodus of Chinese from Hongkew and Ohapei follows the tension. _ The death sentence on two Chinese on a charge of shooting a Japanese marine in Hongkew in November, 1935, has caused satisfaction in Japanese circles. but has not lessened the tension. The Japanese consul at Changsha alleges that the Chinese police are hushing up an alleged attempt to blow up his residence, and is protesting 1° the Hunan Government.
