CONSERVING WHITE PINE
USE FOR BUTTER BOXES TAKEN POP RAILWAY WORK PROTEST IN OTSBORNE Objection to the Public Works Department using white pine timber for railway works was voiced at a meeting of dairy company representatives in Gisborne on Saturday, when it was urged that the Minister in charge of Stale forests should be asked to prohibit the use of while pine timber by the Public Works Department so that it could be reserved for use as primary produce containers. A motion to this effect was passed on the suggestion of Mr. J. 11. Sunderland, secretary of the Kia Ora Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, who said that the Minister in charge of Stale forest reserves had given previous representations quick and sympathetic treatment. The chairman of the Kia Ora company, Mr. M. Doyle, referred to the fast diminishing supplies of white pine in the district, and stressed the necessity of protecting them for the benefit of the industry. Mr. A. J. Murdoch, chairman of the Dairy Board, said if was the board's policy to retain as much as possible of the timber in certain localities for use in those localities. The board had discussed the matter of butter boxes with timber merchants, but their discussions had not been concluded yet. Tie. promised to bear the matter in mind when the board again met the timber people. Ho heartily "supported the proposal that suitable timbers should be preserved. Mr. M. Brown mentioned that, much of the timber on native lands had been destroyed. Jfc was agreed to make representations to the Minister in charge of State forests and also the Minister of Native Affairs on the matter.
