SEASON OPENED POVERTY BAY GREEN PRESIDENT COMPLIMENTED The official opening of the season on the Poverty Buy Rowling Club's green on Saturday afternoon was witnessed by a large gathering of bowlers and spectators, including many ladies. The speakers at the opening ceremony extended their congratulations to the president, Mr. A. Slight, on being elected to the leadership of the club for the third time in succession. After welcoming the bowlers and others present, Mr. Slight thanked the ladies of the croquet club for the great assistance they so readily gave the bowlers. For the excellent condition of the greens, the club was indebted to the green superintendent, Mr. IT. llopkinson, and to the greenkeeper, Mr. If. J. Costello. Mr. Slight spoke appreciatively, too, of the services rendered to the club by Mr. William Stuckey, who had charge of the •catering arrangements, and by the secretary, Mr. X. 11. Shaw. The latter watched the interests of the club with the greatest care and had played a large part in its success over the last seven or eight years. Mr. Slight referred to the endeavour of the bowling clubs to foster a friendly spirit by the institution last season of the pennant fours competition, which would be continued this season. He thanked members for reelecting him president for the third term, and trusted that with their cooperation and under the direction of the strong committee the club would enjoy a happy 12 months.

.100 BOWLERS IX THE DISTRICT On behalf of the Oisbornc and East Coast Bowling Centre, Mr. 1). (i. Robertson, centre secretary, thanked the Poverty Bay club and other clubs for the cordial welcome that had been extended to the centre' to attend the Opening ceremonies. Mi'. Robertson explained that there were 22 centres in Xew Zealand—ll in each island —representing ,"02 clubs, with a total membership of 113,002. The membership of the clubs affiliated to the Oisbornc centre had passed the ."iflO mark, and he was confident that before long the ii.'O figure would be reached.

Representing the Kahutia club, Mr. B. DudhYld praised the condition of the greens, hoped that the club would enjoy a prosperous season, and congratulated .Mr. Slight on being reelected president. Brief addresses in a similar strain were given by representatives of other clubs, the speakers including Mr. .1. O. A. McGregor, vice-president of the Grisborne club, Mr. Short, president of the Tokomaru Bay club, Mr. B. Harris, Tolaga Bay, Mr. Buckingham, Te Karaka, and Mr. East, Patutahi. The president announced that messages of good wishes had been received also from Mr. \V. Paltridge. president of the Strangers' Club', Tolaga Bay and Wairoa clubs, and Inspector Martin, an ex-member of the club who was now in Christehurch. The function concluded with the rolling of kitty and the playing of the first bowl by the president's daughter, Miss Ailsa Slight.
