Light Filter Said To Be Aid To Motorists
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. L DECAUSE two actors itid not wear make-up in a picture scene, the camera man, Air. Lester White, says he discovered a scientific remedy for night-driving automobile accidents. Out of a filter lie invented for an unusual camera problem, ho has worked out, a new 4 ‘ lion-directional ” windshield, for glare I ess night driving. Incidentally, he also solved a problem liiat will aid many pictures.
Had it been possible to use 1-Jd. worth of grease-paint on Hugh Herbert and Charles Butterworth, automobile manufacturers w.ould have had to struggle alone with their problem.
Iu the picture, the opening scene, was Herbert, Butterworth, Una Merkel and Edith Atwater, all in party attire for an old graduates’ reunion. Because the men were supposed to be middle-aged, no make-up was allowed, lest it “smooth them out” and make them look younger. “In addition.” said Air. White, “Aliss Atwater wore a dress of woven gold threads. Now, if too much light were thrown on the dress, all the faces would have gone blank iu comparison. If too little light was used for the dress, the men’s faces would lose character. And if we lighted for the women’s faces in makeup, 1 hr* men’s faces would look too dark. ”
Mr. White solved the problem by casting a light, tinged with red on the gold dress to suppress its highlights, while directing beams of tiny spotlights on the faces of the women, and lighting the men from other lamps in conventional manner. Whenever they moved in the see net, the different lights followed -A light filter, devised by Air. White, blended the lights so that no contrasts could be seen in iho scene.
