A Joy to Read
jyjß. Edward Shanks is a writer of distinction, and his novel, “Old King Cole,’’ from the point of view of literature, is a .joy to read—and this cannot be said of the majority of “thrillers.” The alert major, a leading character, when flying in his aeroplane. notes indivations of an old Roman camp circle, and as lie has friends near gets involved in an unusual mystery in the village of Temple Overroads.
“Old King Cole” turns out to be the village squire, and a terrible personage with a lineage dating back to the camp circle. The young gardener who, even in the prisoner’s dock, is under the influence of the squire, the local parson and Lily Harkncss are all involved ill the mystery which Air. Shanks, in ruthless style, gradually unfolds.
