WATER SHORTAGE

FEAR OP DRY SUMMER REPORT ON BORING UNDERGROUND SUPPLIES A report on the cost of boring for water will be submitted to the next meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council by the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., made this statement at last night's meeting in reply to Cr. P. W. BuS'hnell, who said that there was a fear of a dry summer, and the council should lose no tune in investigating the matter.

The following letter was read from Mr. Leslje H. Reynolds on the matter of underground supplies: "I would ■be pleased, should you invite me, to go over the Matawhero area referred to in my report of 1927, in company with your engineering staff, as none of your officers has ever been over the ground with me. Further, there is a locality which I would like to point out where a truly heavy flow was obtained some years ago and which you may deem tit to investigate. I have mentioned this to Mr. Thomas before, and he should bo able to explain further." The matter was referred to the waterworks committee.

The waterworks committee in its report stated: "The offer of Messrs. Webb and Maginnes to allow the council to investigate the water possibilities on their property at Matawhero was considered, and it was decided to recommend that Messrs. Webb and Maginnes be thanked for their offer, and the engineer ■be authorised to keep this matter in view when investigations are being undertaken. An offer was also received from Mr J. P. Greaves, a water diviner, to indicate to the council where, in his opinion, an underground supply sufficient for Gisborne requirements is located. It was decided to thank Mr. Greaves for his offer, and recommend the engineer to avail himself of his services, if necessary."—The report was adopted.
