The City Council had before it lasl evening a letter from the Palmerston North branch of the Painters and Decorators’ Union protesting against the council removing Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., from the deputy-May orally and membership of two committees lasl week, in Mr. Hodgens’ absence. The letter asked the council to reconsider t lie decisions.

This provoked a lengthy discussion in which it was alleged that Mr. Hodgens, at a public meeting on Saturday, divulged confidential information which was given before an inquiry being hold by tlie council into departmental affairs.

The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, moved that in view of Mr. Hodgens’ breach of the council’s standing orders ho be suspended for the remainder of that evening’s sitting. The motion was carried by six voles to three.

Hr. Hodgens subsequently took a seat, in the public gallery, being asked bv the Mayor if he proposed to leave the council table. The letter from the union was received and no action taken.
