POVERTY BAY UNION LAST WEEKLY MEETING CELTIC-OLD BOYS PT.AY-OFF The weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union’s management committee was hold yesterday niter noon, those present being Messrs. (!. 11. Scents, chairman, J. G. Jeime, E. T. Brosnahan, P. 0. Edmondson, ,1. E. Mercer, 0. S. Burt, N. Tasker, V. Caulton, and the lion, secretary, Mr. Y. B. .McKee.

The chairman said that as the senior championship honours had not boon decided last Saturday, on account of the drawn game, lie understood both teams were keen to play off next Saturday. All members were agreeable, hut some expressed doubt as to wliat would happen if another drawn game resulted. As next: Saturday was the hist day in tlie union’s season before the commencement of cricket, it was decided that in the event of a draw the honours would have lo he shared. As bet ore two -Ifi-miiiiile spells would be played.

The question of a curtain-raiser l’or the championship match proved trouble,some, owing to llie fact that the minor competitions had been completed. Mr. Tasker said that the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association would lie able and willing to field a team, and with this as one team the matter of a curtain-raiser was left to Messrs. Scents and Caulton.

It was reported that the ground was in a very hard condition and members thought that it should bo watered on Saturday morning. It was left to Mr. .Inline to arrange for the Hooding of the ground with water on Friday and Saturday morning. This, it was stated, would reduce the number of casualties owing to the hard ground. Regarding the damage to fences at the Oval during the combined primary school sports on Friday, the chairman asked Mr. Jeune to report. Mr. deune stated that he had asked the caretaker, Mr. Franklin, to assess the damage, and it was found that 14 pipes had been bent, .10 joints broken, and one post broken. The chairman said that the union, had received no not ice that the sports wore going to be held on the Friday. Mr. .Tonne moved that the consent of the union should be obtained during the Rugby season by the Oval Board of Control before it granted the use of the Oval to an outside body. The motion was seconded by Mr. Mercer and carried.
