FIRST “MUD-SLINGING”
PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ATTACK ON ROOSEVELT WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. The first so-called “mud-slinging” in the present Presidential campaign occurred with the publication in Hearst newspapers of a charge of Communist support for the New Deal. “The real candidate but the unofficial candidate of the Comintern is Roosevelt,” it was said. A statement issued by the President’s secretary declares: “The attempt of a certain notorious newspaper owner to make it appear that the President passively accepts the support of alien organisations hostile to the American form of government is conceived of malice and born of political spite. The American people will not permit their attention to be diverted from the real issues to fake issues which no patriotic, honourable and decent citizen would purposely inject into American affairs.”
