APPOINTMENTS
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,—Reading your report of the Hospital Board’s meeting, 1 was interested to notice the discussion by members, in reference to advertising vacancies on the hospital farm. Later in the meeting Mrs. Beer moved that when positions under the ,board are vacant they should be advertised in the local press. The time is long overdue when public attention should be drawn to appointments generally by local bodies, also the laboup bureau. the Borough Council’s casual labour, there has been unfair discrimination in allocating that work. Instead of the work being distributed amongst deserving citizens, it lias been given to a few men who have no more claim to it than others who have not received any. 1 suggest to the ratepayers and the council that a complete overhaul of the staff he made, including all heads of departments, regarding duties and salaries received, with a view to seeing that all salaries are justified for the duties performed. Too much attention is given to tlie lower paid men who do the work and too little to other departments. With regard to the labour bureau, whilst admitting that the unemployment question is a. difficult one. the officials concerned would not earn the criticism they do if appointments were made on qualifications and due consideration given to men who have been on the unemployed register the longest, and not to recent registrations, some of whom have only t.ron iii the town a short time. When officials are interviewed, they decline to discuss llie position, whilst men with lengthy registration and qualified do not receive anv offer of employment.—Yours, etc.. ‘ L. LORD.
