AIWAI WINS STAKES ANION’S CHAMPION PLATE FLYING TO TRIUNE iPer Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. The Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened yesterday in fine weather and with a good attendance. The track was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £31,073 10s, against £24,104 for the first day last year. The Avondale Cup winner, Velocipede returned a dividend of over a score, and Lady Diana won the Henderson to return over a third of a century. In the Avondale Cup race Tradesman was in front early from Velocipede, Scotland, Te Ilai, King Musk and Tybalt, with the order practically the same along the back. At the turn, Tradesman led from Knight of Australia, Velocipede, Silver Brier, Lord Yal, Scotland and Mazir. Velocipede went'through to won by'.a neck from Mazir, with Knight .of Australia a neck away, third. Lord Val was fourth.

Aiwai jumped out to lead all the way and win by half a length from Penzance, with Girl Pat the same distance away, third. Bowyang was fourth. Time, 49 4-osee. May Song and Debham led early, but Anion went to the front along the top and was never headed, to win by II lengths from Debliam, with Queen Nona a head away, third. May Song was fourth.

SEVERE’S SURPRISE WIN STEEPLES TO TAURA LAD (Per Press Association.) FOXTO'n, last night. The Foxton Racing Club’s spring meeting was held in ideal weather. There was an excellent attendance. The totalisator handled £9250, compared with £7147 on the corresponding day last year. Stroller broke down with a torn ligament in a front leg.
