Tho only score in the first spell was a brilliant, try by Watt, the Otago winger. Play otherwise was chiefly confined to t he forwards, who staged a dour:'Struggle on a dry ground. In the second spell, tlie shield holders got the measure of their opponents and, lor 25 minutes, attacked strongly, adding 11 points, to. their total. Trevathan kicked a penalty goal from far out early, in the second half and, a few minutes*' latex, scored from a scrum close to the Wellington line. Keeping up the pressure, Otago scored again, when, Fookes, playing in Iris first representative match of the season, dived over after a brilliant, opening made by Gillies. Trevathan converted. Wellington’s only try came three minutes bcTore time, when Necs, a wing three-quarter, broke through a loose scramble to score an unconverted, try. The Otago men played more like a tgan) than t heir opponents, their forwards giving a solid display and over-running the opposing pack in the second spell. Gillies was dangerous on attack with penetrative runs, and Trqvathan kicked well, getting. 10-out. of the lfi points. Edwards was the most, dangerous Wellington hack. Tindall got the hall smartly from the scrums in the first spell, hut did not see much of it after half-time. Devine, Wells and Lambonrne were the pick of the visitors’ forwards, who, generally speaking, lacked cohesion. Pollock, at fullhack, was not nearly so impressive as Taylor, hut strengthened tho attack when ho came, in to second five-eighth. Griffiths, who hurt a leg, took Pollock’s position.
